Connecting with someone and learning the story of their journey is one of my biggest delights in life. From the moment I learnt of Bauwerk Colour I have been fascinated by their beautiful limewash paints, made with natural pigments. I have had the pleasure of meeting co-founder, Bronwyn Riedel, for past projects, and the local business has also been a generous sponsor at one of the Garden Week displays I took part in.
So when Bronwyn kindly agreed to be a Feature Profile on Slightly Garden Obsessed I was ecstatic! Today I get to share with you a little of her story...
Who are the people behind Bauwerk Colour and can you tell me a bit about their journey on how they got here?
Bronwyn and Andreas Riedel.
Andreas and I started Bauwerk in 2000, Andreas was trained as a stonemason in East Germany, so had lots of construction knowledge including making and using lime paints on heritage projects, he worked for the state art gallery in the Baroque city of Dresden, he then came to Australia and renovated many buildings in Fremantle and Perth.
I was a textile designer, specialising in hand painted fabrics by the metre. I also taught colour theory at the Fremantle Art Centre where I had my studio. I grew up on a farm in the Strathbogie Ranges in North East Victoria and moved to Fremantle in the early 80's. Andreas and I meet there in the late 80's.
Andreas is the technical part of Bauwerk and I am the visual.
Was there a definitive moment or event that happened that sparked the founding of Bauwerk?
We renovated our own house and couldn't find the materials we wanted to use, natural and beautiful is what we love So after a drive in the country one weekend we decided we would start our own business making lime paints. We had a fun time finding our shop, an old bakery in South Fremantle and spent a year renovating it, meanwhile also sourcing our natural pigments from Europe, which is a unique feature of our paint.
Bauwerk has a beautiful, old world feel. What are you favourite travel destination for finding and capturing inspiration?
My favourite destination is the countryside; I find endless colour inspiration in nature, growing up on a farm made me very aware of the colours and patterns in my environment. Every year we spend the summer in our house in Germany south of Berlin, we live in a small country village and I spend lots of time planning Bauwerk next seasons colours and taking photos and walking and riding my bike though the forest.
I also love the coastal beach environment of the southwest of WA I take a lot of inspiration for exterior colours from the coastal plants, my father lives in Denmark and we visit him there every year.
Bauwerk achieves the most beautiful colour palettes with natural pigments and materials. What does it mean to you for your products and business to be environmentally conscious?
It means everything to us, for us it is just an extension of what we believe in our own lives, we could of never have had a business that doesn't fit into that.
It also makes the paint more beautiful as I believe that nature has everything we need and shows us how materials in buildings interact with each other the we don't really need as many environmentally unfriendly materials in our homes and that homes are better without.
We also consider the health of the people making and using our paints, I couldn't have a business that affected peoples' health adversely.
I know this may be a hard one to pick but... what is your favourite Bauwerk application and why?
My favourite Bauwerk application is our OUTSIDE lime paint onto render, it is easy, has the power to change the built environment to make it more beautiful and environmentally friendly.
Can you share any exciting happenings or direction for Bauwerk in 2014?
We have a new website, and have relaunched with new and fully pigmented colours and new product names.
We are offering free in store colour consultations with our newest addition to Bauwerk, Hayley Curnow, who is a interior architect graduate from Curtin.
We continue to grow in the Middle East, and plan to build a 2 million litre capacity natural paint factory there, the largest in the world for natural paints, we are very excited about that.
