My dad is Australian and my mum is from Singapore. She grew up in a village without the usual mod cons, including electricity. I often wonder what my life would have been like if my parents and sister hadn't have moved back to Australia before I was born.
Singapore has changed dramatically since my mum grew up there. The village is no longer, but instead stands a cosmopolitan, forward-thinking city that understands the benefits of green space, even though land is of a premium with its high density living. Dubbed a 'City in a Garden', the streets are lined with lush landscapes and the buildings boast 60 hectares (148 acres) of green roof gardens... not to mention the numerous wall gardens to their facades.
On thinking, I'm sure it wouldn't have been too hard for me to find my place there!
But as much as I love Singapore, my one and only home is Australia. My reasons are more than likely just the same as the next person's - clean air, blue skies, beautiful beaches with white fine sand, opportunity, freedom, developing, health system, education system, vast, diverse, multicultural, laid back, inspiring, creative... the list goes on and is pretty much endless. We have the resources and opportunities to be and do whatever makes us happy (within reason!).
I hear you saying... And you are telling me this information, why?
Well, today is Australia Day! For all of you in Australia, I hope you are celebrating this special day with family and friends in the sun... maybe having a BBQ with Triple J Hottest 100 playing in the background. For all of you who are not, be sure to put it on your MUST-VISIT list.
HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY <3
