The older we get, the faster time and life seems to go... along with more responsibility, bigger obligations and a growing list of endless to-do's. For me, I am forever being pulled between wanting to achieve as much as seemingly possible (in future time) and being in a state of living in the present -- it is a constant battle! But I have to say, I am so grateful for it. I believe it's healthy to be driven beyond the comfort zones, as long as one can find and achieve a sense of balance.
Clearing our minds by way of yoga, meditation and exercise can all help with this, as too our environment -- namely our gardens. Here are a few reasons why these little urban slices are so spiritually important in our lives...
Caring for your garden and watching it develop and grow is a beautiful, rewarding journey. In return, your freshly picked homegrown fruit and vegetables will provide nourishment for you body, and your lawn and tree canopies will provide a place of retreat.
The simple act of watering the garden can be meditative. Early mornings, after a training session, are a favourite of mine. It makes me feel as though I am replenishing my soul as well as the earth. It gives me the time to recentre and allows me to feel present.
Nature has a way of making us feel connected and grounded. Think about how you feel the next time you're in your garden walking around with bare feet -- simple pleasures are the best!
Being surrounded by the colour green has an instant calming effect on the mind and promotes a feeling of well-being. Taking in the fresh air and open sky is a natural stress reliever.
As they say, sharing is caring. A garden is a place of gathering, where life-long memories are created together.
Next time you find yourself thinking of your garden as a chore -- catch yourself, take a look at the list above and rethink your train of thought. You may be missing out on a beautiful opportunity for a little bit of balance time, right on your doorstep.
